Well the other day I was bored
and decided to go to Wall-Mart and look around. Needless to say
I discovered a few cool things while I was there.
First of all I was where every
other self respecting Phreaker would be... the electronics section.
While I was checking to see if they had any good CDs I noticed that
the little thing that you scan the CD under and it plays music clips
for you was hitched up to a network. So of course I had to investigate
further. So far I have not come up with much, but what I did find
out was that the whole thing is tied into a 100 Mbps network. The
thing that you scan the CD under and plays the music has 2 cables
on the back of it a power cable and a Cat5 network cable plugged
into it. I followed the Cat5 cable back to a hub. Also plugged into
the hub was a hefty looking server. The server is stashed under
the CD rack, IM assuming that the server stores all the music. I
have no clue what OS it is running but it must have a massive Hard
Drive to store all that music. I would also love to find out what
the things that you scan the CDs under is. If anyone has any information
on this let me know.
After making a fool of myself
by crawling around in electronics I moved onto automotive. Believe
it or not there were a few cool things in automotive too. The first
neat thing I found in automotive was the little touch screen battery
finder. This neat little unit is located on the end of rack that
holds the car batteries. While fooling around with this I noticed
that the case can easily be tilted up. Of course being the curious
guy I am I decided to lift up the cover and see what is under the
hood. Needless to say it was a neat piece of equipment. The unit
consisted of a computer with a built in touch screen monitor. This
seemed quite odd to me so I decided to see what it ran off of so
I pressed the reboot button. It turns out this is quite the nice
computer. The computer was a Celron 400, 32megs ram, 6.4 gig HD,
Floppy, CD ROM, and running Windows 98se. You would thing that it
would be more cost effective to build a custom computer..... I guess
not. So next time you go to Wal-Mart play around with it a little.
NOTE: It is easy to crash the system if you keep on hitting the
back button.
Wal-Mart has recently started to issue the Motorola business radios
to their employees. These radios are used by Wal-Mart employees
for communication inside the store. The only problem with this little
setup is that anyone can go to Radio shack or even right in Wal-Mart
and buy one of these radios for Forty dollars. Now when you get
ahold of one of these radios you can have all kinds of fun messing
with the employees. The best part is you can be up to Two miles
away (if there is not too much blocking the way). The only tricky
part is you have to find out what frequency they are using. This
is not always as hard as it looks. Just find someone that has one
and look on the LCD and see what channel it is on. The Wal-Mart
near me user 14-silent-14 what this means is they are using channel
14 and sub channel 14 kinda like 14.14. If you don't get it read
the manual. When you get the frequency what I recommend doing is
going outside and just have fun confusing them for a while, when
that gets boring just yell things. What I like to to is also have
someone inside so they can tell me what happened.
Have fun and don't get caught:
I have some stuff to add as
soon as I type it.
